How to Winter Proof Your Garden

Article by Nick Rinylo

Beautiful gardens in the UK

We’ve reached that time of year when the days are shorter, the nights are longer, and the cold weather is upon us. Summer is officially over, it’s time to carve those pumpkins and grab a hot chocolate as we watch the leaves fall. Winter can be a really beautiful time of year to get outside to appreciate nature and how it changes from season to season. But in order to enjoy your garden through the colder months, there are some things you have to do.

Get a grit

Watch your step! Be careful of your patio area and pathway, as our winters seem to get nastier each year. It’s very difficult to see ice so take extra caution and lay down some grit to keep your loved ones safe.

Safety is an important issue, but there are ways to tackle it head on. You should ensure that all outside taps are isolated and drained for the next few months. If you have a pond, we also advise you to cover it up over the winter period.

The tables have turned

Prolonging the life of your garden furniture is important if you don’t want to keep re-buying it every year. Take advantage of your garage or shed and keep those furnishings locked away to avoid any wear and tear over the winter. If you’re running out of space, another solution to prolong the lifespan of your garden furniture is to apply an appropriate weather preserve to it, or buy some strong, well made furniture covers.

A great tip is to invest in high quality garden furniture that can withstand bad weather and a little wear and tear. Luxury rattan furniture is a great bet as it’s easy to care for, long lasting, and will look stunning in any garden. Constant tender love and care won’t always save your furniture, so ensure you’re buying quality for years to last.

Don’t get ready, stay ready

Preparing for spring is an important part of winter proofing your garden. Make life easier for yourself by staying on top of raking the leaves. While you’re at it, why not take advantage and store the fallen leaves in a leaf bag to let them turn into leaf mould, which is a great soil conditioner to use throughout the summers to come.

It can be harder to keep on top of the lawn over the colder months, but we recommend to keep it short up until around mid November. Just ensure to keep the leaves off the grass to keep a healthy lawn. The final cut of the year should be slightly longer to protect the lawn from the frost over winter.

It’s a wrap

It’s about time to practice your present wrapping skills by wrapping up your plants to keep them healthy over winter. You can lengthen the life of your plants by wrapping them in fleece jackets to help through the cold conditions. A garden cloche is perfect to keep your shrubs intact. There’s a wide variety of options and materials suitable for your flowerbeds. A greenhouse is also perfect to keep your plants in top condition.

Take care of the little ones

Caring for wildlife isn’t everyone’s top priority, but it’s a great thing to do. The animals need your help, especially in the winter. Birds are especially vulnerable during the cold season so we need your help to keep them well fed over Christmas! A well stocked bird feeder is a nice touch for your garden and doesn’t have to break the bank.

You might also find hedgehogs preparing for hibernation, so if you’re doing any landscaping then be careful of those little guys! You can even DIY a hedgehog house for them, to keep them safe and warm through the winter.

So there you have it guys! Luckily for you, there are beautiful spots spread out all over the UK, and they look incredible at any time of the year. But as it’s nearly Autumn, why not take one last trip down and watch nature take over the beautiful scenery. We hope you enjoyed our top 5 picks!

Winter is coming

Make sure you set aside some time to continue enjoying your garden this winter. Let these tips guide you and you should have a happy, healthy, winter-proof garden to enjoy until next spring! So pull out a rake and clear those leaves, give your furniture some love, and protect your garden before winter starts.
